A save the date asks guests to reserve time. A wedding invitation asks them to attend a defined celebration and tell you whether they can come. You may need both if guests must make travel plans before you have finished the schedule.
Decide what you can confirm at each stage. That will help you avoid asking for a commitment on incomplete information.
Use the early message to announce the date
Include your names, the wedding date, and the city. For a destination event, name the country too. Say that you will send an invitation later.
Guests can then consider annual leave or travel. Give them a contact option if they need details before booking.
Send a save the date to the people you intend to invite. Treat it as a commitment to include them rather than a survey of who might be interested.
Use the invitation to explain attendance
The full invitation needs the venue address, ceremony or reception time, and the events that particular guest can attend. Include the RSVP method and deadline.
| Information | Save the date | Invitation |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed wedding date and city | Include | Include |
| Venue address and arrival instructions | Add if useful and confirmed | Include |
| Final RSVP request | Usually leave for later | Include |
| Meal or transport questions | Wait for confirmed plans | Ask if needed |
A guest who receives both messages should see matching dates and locations. If you change a plan between them, explain the change in a separate message.
Decide whether you need two stages
For a small local wedding with confirmed plans, you may choose to send the invitation without a separate save the date. Consider how much notice your guests need.
For an overseas celebration, a holiday weekend, or a wedding with guests from several countries, an early announcement can help them assess the trip before you have the full itinerary.
Sending two messages does not require two elaborate designs. You can make the first one short and spend your editing time on the invitation.
Keep one source for the final details
After sending the invitation, direct guests to the same page for the schedule and replies. Explain any urgent changes in a message as well; guests may not revisit a page without a reason.
Create the fuller invitation in the Our Yes Day app and test the demo experience. Designing is free. That gives you time to review the final details before guests receive the link.
